2022 Basketball National Championships - Day 1 Recap
The USCAA wrapped up the first day of the 2022 Basketball National Championships with games being played at Virginia State University Multi-Purpose Center and Statesman Hall at Richard Bland College. #3 D'Youville College defeated #6 Bryant & Stratton - Albany 70-43 in the first game of the Women's Division I bracket. Sara Pfeiffer (D'Youville) had a game high 29 points. D'Youville advances to play Bryant & Stratton - Buffalo in the semi-finals on Wednesday at 1pm in the VSU MPC. #2 Bryant & Stratton - Buffalo won their first round game against #7 Mid-Atlantic Christian University by a score of 84-52. Kat Kanhoye (BSC-Buffalo) led all scorers with 27 points. The Mustangs will play BSC-Albany at VSU in the consolation bracket on Tuesday at 8am.
The #3 seed Bryant & Stratton - Buffalo Bobcats picked up another win from their Men's team in the first round of the Division I bracket, deafeating #6 The Apprentice School 66-52 in a close fought game. DJ Little (BSC-Buffalo) had 21 points and 7 rebounds for the Bobcats. They will advance to play Clinton College in the semi-finals on Tuesday at 6pm at VSU. The Builders will play Manor College on Tuesday at 10am at the Virginia State University MPC. #2 Clinton College pulled ahead of #7 seed Bryant & Stratton - Syracuse in the 4th quarter of their first round game at Richard Bland, winning 74-63. Cameron Shannon had 29 points and 7 rebounds for the Golden Bears. BSC-Syracuse will play Bluefield State College in the consolation bracket on Tuesday at 10am at Richard Bland.
The #7 seed in the Women's Division II bracket, University of Maine-Augusta, won in overtime vs #10 Penn State Fayette by a score of 54-48. Hope Butler and Kaeti Butterfield had 15 points each for the Moose. They advance to play conference foe, Central Maine Community College, in the second round on Tuesday at 8pm at Richard Bland. In the final game of the night at Statesman Hall, #8 Penn State Beaver returned to the National Tournament to square off against #9 seed Five Towns College. Beaver cruised to a 68-34 victory over The Sound with Jimya Chambers and Alexis Cross both scoring 11 for the Lady Lions. They advance to play the #1 seed Johnson & Wales Charlotte on Tuesday at 10pm at Virginia State University. Five Towns plays Penn State Fayette on Tuesday at 6pm at Statesman Hall.
#1 Clinton College came into round one of the tournament on an 11-game win streak and an overall record of 19-2. The Golden Bears defeated the Conquistadors by a score of 74 to 60. Clinton College plays St. Mary of the Woods on Wednesday in the Virginia State Multi-Purpose Center at 11am. St. Mary of the Woods College entered the Women's Division I National Tournament as the #5 seed and defeated #4 Bryant & Stratton - Syracuse 73-66. The Bobcats will play Florida National in the consolation bracket at Richard Bland at 8am on Tuesday.
The #1 seed in Men's Division I, Paul Quinn College defeated #8 Bluefield State College by a score of 88-74. Spencer McElway had a 20 & 20 game for the Tigers, posting 23 points and 20 rebounds. The Tigers play their next game against Bryant & Stratton - Albany on Tuesday in the VSU MPC at 4pm. #4 Bryant & Stratton - Albany beat the #5 Manor College Blue Jays 71-61 in a first round game of the Division I bracket. Charles Echols had 25 points to lead all scorers. Manor College will play The Apprentice School at 10am on Tuesday at the VSU MPC.
#7 Johnson & Wales Charlotte vs #10 Berkeley College (NY) was a true test for both teams, with JWU Charlotte coming out victorious in a 80-73 win. The Bobcats had big contributions from Fred Patterson and Zyrion Wilkins who had 20 and 17 points respectively. They advance to play at 2pm on Tuesday at the Virginia State University Multi-Purpose Center against #2 seed Penn State Wilkes-Barre. In the final game of day one, the #8 seed Southwestern Adventist University was upset by #9 Kent State Tuscarawas by a score of 87-73. London Cobbs and Kameron Shockley had half of the team's points with 22 each. The Golden Eagles will play their second round game vs the top seed in the Men's Division II bracket, Penn State Mont Alto, on Tuesday at 12pm at Richard Bland College. While SWAU will play Berkeley College (NY) in the consolation bracket at 12pm on Tuesday at RBC.
